When it comes to buying organic produce and other groceries in La Herradura, at first it can seem impossible to find. But when you know where to look, there are hidden pockets of quality, affordable organic groceries both in the town of La Herradura and in the neighboring towns of Almunecar and Nerja.
In the town of La Herradura, you can find organic groceries at the Jimenez Supermarket and Happy Papaya shop. You can also order an organic veggie box from a local farmer, or order groceries online at Agricultura Vedica Maharishi. In neighboring Almunecar, you can shop for organic groceries at EcoLifestyle, La Boutique Bio de Axelle, or at Aldi.
When in Spain, don’t make the mistake of looking for things that say “organico”. That term is usually used when you’re talking about trash versus compost! Not exactly what you want to end up in your grocery basket. Instead, look for the term “biologico” to find organic produce and groceries in Spain.
Organic Produce and Groceries in La Herradura, Spain
If you don’t have a car in La Herradura and don’t feel like figuring out the bus system, there are still a few organic grocery options for you! And if you’re looking for things to do in La Herradura without a car (other than buy groceries!) check out this article: What to do in La Herradura without a car.
Jimenez Supermarket
Jimenez supermarket, located here, has a small shelving unit dedicated to organic groceries. No produce, but they manage to provide a variety of options for such a small area. You’ll find things like tofu, grains, beans, flours, tahini, oils, pasta, and so much more.
You won’t find organic produce at Jimenez Supermarket, but it should be your go-to stop for organic dry goods and groceries within the town of La Herradura.
Happy Papaya
Within the town of La Herradura, Happy Papaya Ecotienda is more of an herb and supplement shop. But they do carry some organic grocery items, and they’re happy to order anything you’re wanting access to. If you’re looking for high quality vitamins and supplements for your family in La Herradura, it’s definitely the place to go!
Happy Papaya’s hours are a bit variable and it can be hard to catch them open sometimes. But if you’re in that part of town, it’s worth walking by to see what they have in stock.
Organic Vegetable Box from a Local Farmer
There is a farmer that provides local, organic, in season produce to La Herradura and the surrounding areas. You’ll receive a text every week with that box’s contents. You then decide if you’d like a box that week! It’s a take it or leave it kind of approach with the contents of the box, but there’s a bit of flexibility in there.
For example, if your family absolutely despises cherimoyas (also known as custard apples, the divide between cherimoya lovers and cherimoya haters is real!), you may be able to pass on those and he’ll replace them with something else in your box.
He delivers right to you and charges 20 euros for the box and 3 euros for delivery - and you get a lot! Here’s an example of the contents of one of the boxes I received:

Organic Produce and Groceries in Almunecar
Eco Lifestyle
Eco Lifestyle is a small organic grocery store in the neighboring town of Almunecar. They have a large variety of organic groceries. Anything from breads to grains to sweeteners and vinegars. You’ll also find organic sauces, vegan pestos, and organic olives, jams, and crackers.
They have a very limited organic produce section, but it’s worth checking out what they have in stock for the day. For variety, Eco Lifestyle is the place to go if you’re looking for shelf-stable organic groceries in or around La Herradura.
Eco Lifestyle also has a section dedicated to household and personal care items. Things like laundry detergent, deodorants, dish soap, and more.
La Boutique Bio de Axelle
This organic grocery store is also in Almunecar, but La Boutique Bio is the place to go if you’re looking for organic produce in or around La Herradura. It’s a small shop, but their focus on organic produce makes it worth the visit.
They also have some shelves dedicated to dry goods and specialty items, but if you’re really looking for a variety of dry goods, I’d head over to Eco Lifestyle. For organic (and local!) produce, La Boutique Bio is your best bet.
Aldi
Aldi has a large variety of affordable organic products available throughout the store. On occasion, they also have some organic produce in their Almunecar location, but I wouldn’t count on consistent variety and availability.
Aldi is more for affordable, organic dry goods like pastas, crackers, oils, and beans. They also have a large variety of affordable, organic wines in stock!
I’ve also heard that Lidl and Mercadona in Almunecar have some organic products available, but in general in life, I tend to gravitate toward Aldi.
Organic Produce and Groceries in Nerja and Frigliana
Agricultura Vedica Maharishi - Huerto Ecologico
This small store is one of the more popular places to get organic produce and groceries in La Herradura. They have an in person store in Frigliana (about 15 minutes drive from La Herradura), but you can also order from their online store and have it delivered to you!
If you peruse their website, you’ll find a large variety of organic and ecofriendly products including: Fruits and vegetables, natural hygiene products, supplements, bread, jam, dried fruits, nuts, seeds, grains, tofu, veggie burgers, crackers, miso, vinegar, oil, spice and herbs, chocolate, coffee, and cleaning products.
So yeah, just about everything you could ever think of or want!
Nerja also has all the major stores like Aldi, Lidl, and Mercadona where you are likely to find organic groceries as well. Almunecar is just a bit closer and easier to get to from La Herradura than Nerja. But if you’re in town, it’s worth a visit to those shops as well.
Did I miss anything? Organic produce and groceries was a bit of a trial and error and word of mouth adventure for me, so I’m sure there are more options out there! It just isn’t as easy as a quick Google search like if you were in the States.
